Explosion flattens house

By Mary Moreno

San Antonio Express-News

The explosion ripped through the drizzly afternoon.

(Billy Calzada/Express-News)

A dog searches for her litter of puppies by her house in the 2000 block of Rigsby Avenue that was destroyed in an explosion Friday afternoon.

The blast caused the house to collapse, but there was no fire. No one was injured.

But the next sight is what really startled Elizabeth Hernandez and her boyfriend as they talked in a bar parking lot: Part of a large white metal tube rocketing through the roof of a five-room house on Rigsby Avenue, shooting into the sky.

"He saw something fly by and he told us to duck down," Hernandez said of her boyfriend, Gene Borrego.

Afraid the object would land on them but too stunned to avoid looking, she glanced up to see "the whole house coming down."

Seconds after the 30-gallon electric water heater arced overhead and landed in a crumpled heap nearby, Borrego ran to the house to make sure no one was inside.
